Enigma consisted of three rotors with twenty-six letters arranged randomly around its circumference. There were, twenty-six corresponding electrical contacts below the letters.

When a typewriter key was pressed, the first rotor moved forward one notch, changing the circuit, making a new contact, and lighting up a letter on the lamp-board.
